IBM's Watson Dominates Humanity in Jeopardy

9

world-shaker:

IBM supercomputer Watson has defeated two of the Jeopardy‘s greatest players, and it wasn’t even close.

In the second day of Jeopardy‘s three day “Man vs. Machine” special, Watson wiped the floor with Ken Jennings (a 74-time champion) and Brad Rutter (a 20-time champion). Ken Jennings ended day two with $4,800 and Brad Rutter ended with $10,400, while Watson took home $35,734 in prize winnings. Out of 30 answers, Watson was first to buzz in on 25 of them, getting all but one of them right.

Very little stumped IBM’s artificial intelligence project. It even knew about Saturday Night Live‘s Church Lady character. Watson got an answer about art wrong, and it was stumped on an answer about a theft of a Titian portrait, though nobody had the correct response.

This sums up my life.

A Severe Case of Senioritis? Nah, I’ve had this since freshman year.

I am narcissistic, pessimistic, sarcastic, and agnostic. I am a procrastinator. And damn proud of it.

I have managed to go through my high school career [three and a half years of it, anyway] by putting off every paper and project I have been assigned until the weekend before, or even night before, or even period beforeit is due. Some, days after they are due. I have also managed to maintain a 93 average while doing so. One point higher and I could be a member of the NHS. So I think to myself, is putting off everything until the last minute really worth all the trouble it inevitably causes?

The only reason I procrastinate is because I am an essentially lazy creature. But honestly, will a little extra effort really kill me? I get high B’s/low A’s in all of my classes because I pay attention in my classes (most of the time), so I pass the tests, but I do little to no homework, so my average goes down.

My theory is: do a little work here and there and - Viola! good grades galore. But then I think, “here and there” is a little too much work; how about “here or there”? Of course, I pick “there” because it sounds farther away, and that way I can still put off doing the work without actually putting it off, you know?

Yeah, that was all a load of the BS that I constantly delude myself into believing is true, but hey, wishful thinking has never killed anyone, has it?

And, honestly, I’ve tried. I’ve tried to get all my shit done on time, to get more than five hours of sleep, to finally feel like I’m not a zombie with plastered on smiles emitting humorless jokes and sarcastic comments. And it works. …For about a week, then I feel the zombie itching to come to the surface, distracting me, clouding my mind, and suddenly, I find myself right back where I started.

And it hits me - this whole not procrastinating thing isn’t me.

I guess… I would miss hangover I experience all day from pulling an all-nighter. I would miss the thrill you experience when you finally finish that project you’ve been working on for the past six hours straight. I would miss the stunned look on my friends’ faces when they see how well it turned out. I would miss the pressure of trying to write a research paper in a half hour lunch period. I would miss wracking my brain for excuses as to why I didn’t finish. I would miss it all. Damn, I sound like a masochist. I’m not, though! So…yeah.

Hello, world [well, people that follow me]! My name is Sofie and I’m a procrastinator.

And you know what? I don’t have a problem with it.

I don't like facebook girl jokes.

intimationsofimmortality:

Unless you’re 11, telling the world you like it on the floor when really, you’re referring to your handbag and not sex, isn’t funny.

If you’re an adult just tell the world straight. If you want to tell your friends you like it in the ear, go ahead. I respect that.

"A survey of girls in Zimbabwean junior schools in 2000 reported by Amnesty International found 92 per cent had been sexually propositioned by an older man on their way to school, and half of them had experienced unsolicited sexual contact by strangers. Factors such as these mean that, simply by virtue of being born female, millions of children across the world are denied their right to an education. In fact, according to the charity Childline, in South Africa a girl actually has a higher chance of being raped than of learning to read."

Now bleat that feminism is no longer relevant. Go on. I fucking dare you.

far too important to not re-blog.

I’m so tired of trying to explain to white, upper-middle class, high-school aged girls that feminism IS relevant… I wanna grab them and shove their noses against a window to the world (other than television) and tell them to JUST look out it and open their eyes.

Falling, like dew, upon a thought, produces
